Compared to the majority of risks an enterprise will face, crises are relatively unpredictable, improbable, and possibly fatal to the organization. It is crucial to develop a crisis management plan. This material is one of the Integrated Curriculum Modules created as part of the KPMG and William Isaac & Michael Oxley Center for Business Leadership Curriculum Development Initiative (CDI).

Compared to the majority of risks an enterprise will face, crises are relatively unpredictable, improbable, and possibly fatal to the organization if not managed correctly.  Hence, developing one or a few cohesive plan(s), uniform enough to be universally understood yet flexible enough to be able to adapt, is crucial.
The goal of such a plan is business continuity, which can be achieved by following a plan such as Augustine’s six-step process: avoid, prepare, recognize, contain, resolve, and profit. As the external environment surrounding enterprises changes, so does stakeholder expectations of crisis management. By expanding the steps of the plan across stakeholder groups and initiating different plans for different categories of interest, enterprises can enhance their preparation and reaction.
In this module, students will learn how important crisis management is for Boards of Directors and senior management.
Module learning objectives:
- Discuss crisis management as a separate topic in risk management
- Use Norman Augustine’s basic, but highly effective, approach for managing crises
- Help students develop crisis management skills using in-class activities
Module overview:
Material is included that can be used in up to four 75-minute class periods.  The recommended delivery methods are flexible and can be adapted to your needs.  Discussion questions and relevant activities are also included in the instructor material.
